Adirondack Nature panorama of a wild heron rookery

This panorama of a heron rookery was photographed from the top of a recently abandoned beaver lodge. I've seen various heron rookeries in different parts of the Adirondacks - but few have had as many active nests as this one did a few years ago. There were over thrity active nests at one point! As the beavers dam and flood low lying plains, killing the older trees in the backwater, the tree tops die and the barren branches become nesting sites for the blue heron.
