Looking north on Schroon Lake to Hoffman Mtn. and the High Peaks

After searching for many years for just the right vantage point to photograph Schroon Lake, in late summer, 2001, I finally found the rock outcropping I'd been looking for. This outlook has a view of most of the southern part of the lake, looking over at the state campground and the Adirondack area of the lake, as well as the mountains to the north and west.

After going back a few different times to photograph the view in different types of lighting conditions, I decided what was most special about the view was the depth in all the mountain layers receding off into the north. I found the early soft light of dawn was just right for setting off these layers, while giving enough detail to keep all of them sharp and visible.

The sun had just risen when I shot this panorama, so there were still some pinks above the horizon, with a soft blue sky above, and enough light to show up the greens in the nearby mountains and shoreline. The first boat ventured out on the lake soon after I took this photo.
