360 Nature panorama at sunset on Whiteface Mountain

Every so often I like to ski or mountain bike up the Whiteface toll road (when the toll road is closed) - and enjoy the expansive view from the summit. It's hard to find the view clear enough though, so that all off the mountains don't have such a hazy appearance.

In late September 2000, my son, Carl, and I traveled up the summit on a clear bright day. Predictions showed high pressure moving in so the air was supposed to be quite dry. After getting to the summit a couple of hours before sunset, we began to notice some high clouds off to the west. As I set up and took some photos, this whole patch of mid-level cirrus / stratus clouds moved across the entire sky. I began to worry the trip was going to be a washout until I realized it was staying clear over to the west - and the sun would highlight the clouds as it went down.

As the sun settled lower on the horizon, the light was filtered by the clouds which gave everything a warm golden glow. With the moisture in the air, it was hard to see the Green Mountains on the other side of Lake Champlain, but the High Peaks were beautifully silhouetted against the southern sky beyond the Lake Placid area.
